An Experimental Infective Endocarditis Model in Rats

OBJECTIVE: Infective endocarditis (IE) is defined as infection of the endocardial surface heart. Updates are needed in diagnosis and treatment IE, well animal models IE. Based on this need, a new model infective induced by S. aureus was described our study.
 METHODS: This study performed 7 Wistar albino male rats, each aged six months weighing 250-300 g. Underwent surgical implantation 20 G catheter, to gain access right common carotid artery. Twenty-four hours after implantation, 0.5 ml 100.000 colony forming unit (cfu) injected via tail vein 3 days later echocardiography rats subsequently sacrificed. IE diagnosed histopathologically.
 RESULTS: Two were exitus one day auerus given. The mortality rate experiment 28.5%. Histopathological examination revealed vegetations bacterial colonization detected endocardium all that protruded from cardiac cavity.
 CONCLUSION: Our first literature identify rat using catheter. Due practical application procedure (use catheter) study, we think it will provide much convenience researchers experimental research treatment.
